Commission on Evangelism

Working together to fulfill the Great Commission

The purpose of the Assemblies of God’s newly formed Commission on Evangelism is to seek effective ways of proclaiming the good news about Jesus Christ.

The local church is the base of outreach to the nation and the world. The U.S. Assemblies of God is part of a worldwide network of churches. This provides believers with the opportunity to reach those in their community with the gospel and to help reach the spiritually lost all over the world through the Fellowship’s missionaries in more than 160 countries.

The Assemblies of God has been fulfilling the Great Commission since its inception. The founders of the Fellowship began with the conviction that no one can fulfill the Great Commission individually. The greatest task in the world can only be accomplished if churches work together in cooperation, which is why the Assemblies of God is called a "voluntary cooperative Fellowship."

To help the Fellowship continue effectively in evangelism, the Commission on Evangelism is a resource to local churches, individual believers and various departments in the Fellowship’s national headquarters. It also reports through various media how local churches are reaching people and growing throughout the Fellowship.

The commission produces printed evangelism materials as well as educational and inspirational videos. They are designed to be thought-provoking, culturally relevant, and to penetrate the perceptions in the United States that are increasingly oriented to temporary rather than eternal issues. Every person needs to understand that he or she will spend eternity somewhere and will ultimately face God – our Creator and Judge.

The commission coordinates conferences and seminars emphasizing evangelism. Its main objective is to help empower believers to share their faith effectively.

"It is the responsibility of every believer to live in obedience to God’s Word by sharing the message about Jesus Christ and living a godly life that is a testimony to the validity of that message," says Randy Hurst, who directs the commission. "We want to inspire people to get involved in the work of the Holy Spirit in other people’s lives. The Holy Spirit is the One who persuades people. Our Lord promised that when the Holy Spirit came to help us, He would convince the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment (John 16:8). When we work in cooperation with Him, we can obey our Lord’s commands with confidence and effectiveness."
