The prayer that saved my life
SPRINGFIELD, MO. — Traffic was moving at a 55-mph clip when a station wagon knifed in front of me from an adjoining street. I swerved to avoid a collision, only to hit the embankment with enough force to roll my vehicle.
When the car came to a halt I found myself sandwiched between the bucket seats. I heard tires screech and horns blare as other vehicles dodged the wreckage. Images of a NASCARlike pileup flooded my mind.
Terrified, I cried, “Jesus, save me!” Moments later the ordeal was over and my life spared. I crawled out the passenger door with only a few bruises.
That was 25 years ago, but since then I’ve certainly bellowed my share of desperate prayers. And God has come to my rescue time and again.
I know He hears each prayer — those we whisper in secret, those we offer in tears, and the ones we scream at the top of our lungs. But it is comforting to know that, because of His love and mercy, He promises to rush to our aid whenever we cry out for His protection and provision.
What are you going through today? Are you facing a desperate situation? Then, with urgency in your voice, cry out to God for His help. Tell Him you have done all you know to do — and now you are putting your life and future in His hands. Simply find a place where you can be alone and call on the name of the Lord.
If this is your desperate hour, claim the promise of Psalm 34:4-7: “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears. ... This poor man called, and the Lord heard him; he saved him out of all his troubles. The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them” (NIV).
