The tide turns

The Children of Israel were in desperate straits. They had just been freed from bondage in Egypt. But Pharaoh changed his mind and pursued them. With the Red Sea before them and Pharaoh’s army behind them there seemed nowhere to go.

But God opened a way only He could open. “All that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land” (Exodus 14:21, NIV).

The Israelites crossed the Red Sea on the dry ground God had prepared. When Pharaoh’s army followed them, God withdrew the restraints and the entire force drowned in the resulting deluge. This enemy was finished.

All Christians have milestones in their lives — points where the tide turns and apparent defeat is turned to victory. The Children of Israel were vulnerable as they left Egypt. They were pressed into a place where no one but God could deliver them. In fact, God specifically rerouted them to a place where their circumstances would leave them no choice but to call on God. “When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, ‘If they face war they might change their minds and return to Egypt’ ” (13:17).

The more difficult way is sometimes the better one. How many people have failed to appropriate God’s promises because they ran from a lesser enemy?

The important thing is not how good our circumstances look when we are hit by difficulties. What’s important is being in God’s place, prepared by obedience. Your back may be against the wall (or the sea) right now; but if that is where God has led you, don’t despair. You are prepared for victory. Remember that to be where the tide turns you must first be where the waves crash. Your greatest hope for victory is when your only hope is God. Your tide will turn.
