How shall we then give?

Throughout my adult life, I’ve tried to live by these simple principles of financial stewardship.

First, everything I have is the Lord’s (Psalm 24:1). I am only a leaseholder and trustee. I brought nothing into this world and I will take nothing out.

Second, I consider the tithe as the minimum payment on the lease (Malachi 3:6-12). The first check I write every month is for tithes because I want to honor the Lord.

Third, I give offerings far beyond the tithe because I want to bless the work of the Lord, advance the Great Commission, demonstrate compassion for the needy and support Assemblies of God higher education.

Fourth, it is important to give in secret and to be responsive to those in need around us. We may not be able to help everyone, but we can be generous with the persons who come across our path, especially looking for opportunity to make a significant impact rather than a token one. I would rather give $100 to one cause than spread $5 bills around to 20 different needs.

Finally, my wife and I have an estate plan in place. If the Lord does not come first, then AG Financial Solutions will make sure the interest from what we leave behind is to be shared equally with our children so long as they live, and that upon their passing everything goes to providing scholarships for ministerial students. As far as I’m concerned, preparing the next generation of ministers is the most important thing we can do because without them there will be no church plants, church revitalizations, or missionaries at home and abroad.

I’m hoping this issue of the Evangel will help you with insights on how you can provide for your family and for the work of the Lord. God wants you to be a good steward of what He has given you.
