An Old Scrap of Paper
As I type this, an unimpressive, slightly stained, yet
remarkable scrap of paper is sitting on my desk. It came in the mail this
It’s a salvation coupon clipped from the back of a
Pentecostal Evangel. Since 1997 we have regularly included the ABCs of
Salvation in the magazine, an easy way for a reader to know how to pray to
begin a new life in Christ.
Next to it we print a coupon to return for those who have
followed those steps, letting us know of their decision and requesting us to
send them a free booklet to help in their new Christian life.
We currently average about eight of these coupons every
working day — more than 2,000 a year.
But this particular coupon is special. It came from a
magazine dated March 8, 1998. More than 11 years ago. For more than a decade,
this one magazine has stayed around, somewhere, until it came to this one
individual … who read it at just the right time.
God used a magazine printed more than a decade ago to reach
a soul in need today.
Printed periodicals have fallen on hard times recently as
people turn more and more to the Internet and other technological devices. But
there will always be a place for print. Printed material can hang around for a
long time — especially if it is God’s Word — and reach people that
the Internet can never reach. Since the issue of the Evangel this person read
was printed in 1998, we have received more than 20,000 salvation coupons.
God said His Word would not return void, “but will
accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isaiah
55:11, NIV). So pass the Word along. Hand out those Pentecostal Evangels. You
may never know what good they have done, but they are there, ready to lead a
soul to Christ … maybe today, or maybe even many years from now.
