July 6, 2010 - Smiling Servant

By Doug Clay

“When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. ‘Do you understand what I have done for you?’ he asked them. ‘You call me “Teacher” and “Lord,” and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you’” (John 13:12-15, NIV).

After Jesus washed the disciples’ feet, He commanded them to do the same for each other. The point was not so much about washing feet as much as it was serving others.

The Division of the Treasury at the Assemblies of God headquarters is a service-oriented ministry. We exist to serve the ministries of headquarters, not the other way around.

Serving others opens us up to a world of relationships that can bring success into our lives. As servants, we must be willing …

• To put others first by being agreeable, not disagreeable.
• To excel by doing whatever it takes to make it happen.
• To be thorough in following through on our tasks.
• To see the value in those we serve and let our language reflect that.
• To be unselfish. It’s not about us ... we exist to help others be effective.

— Doug Clay is general treasurer of the Assemblies of God.
