Aug. 19, 2010 - A Good Hunger

By Dave Kidd

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled” (Matthew 5:6, NIV).

When Robin and I have the opportunity to go out to eat at a favorite steakhouse, we eat sparingly all day in anticipation of that evening’s meal. Our restraint allows us to enjoy our selections more, but it creates quite a hunger leading up to the time when we are seated at our table. While waiting to be seated, I am thankful for the noise of the crowd as it masks the sounds of my protesting stomach.

But imagine if, on our way to the steakhouse, Robin and I stopped and grabbed something at a fast-food drive-through. Would we still enjoy our meal at the steakhouse? Perhaps, but we would not enjoy the meal nearly as much as we would if we were hungry.

Just as physical hunger and thirst motivate us to crave something to eat and drink, an intense desire for God and a right relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ, should motivate us to crave spiritual food.

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33).

Imagine what could happen if we truly begin to seek God’s kingdom, if we desire God and a right relationship with Him
