  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

Feb. 9, 2011 - The Word Is Alive!

By Kristen Feola

“The word of God is living and active” (Hebrews 4:12, NIV).

I love the Bible. It’s such a precious Book to me. However, there are people who don’t feel the same way about the Word of God. They consider it to be an antiquated piece of work, nothing more than a compilation of stories about people who lived long ago. The Bible is completely irrelevant to them, and they fail to see how it has any application for life today.

My experience is completely different. The Word of God is alive and active, not dead and defunct! For example, lately I’ve been reading Genesis, revisiting the account of Abraham and God’s covenant to make him into a great nation. Although this passage is familiar to me, I’ve received fresh words of encouragement by studying it again.

When the Lord told Abraham, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you” (Genesis 12:1), God didn’t provide any additional details. Abraham had no idea where he would end up, and yet he trusted and obeyed the Lord. Later, though, he struggled with fear. Abraham couldn’t see how God would fulfill the promise of giving him numerous descendants when he didn’t even have a son. God told Abraham, “Do not be afraid” (Genesis 15:1). Even though Abraham didn’t understand God’s ways or His timing, he believed the Lord.

Are you anxious about anything? Find comfort in the truth of Psalm 116:7, which says, “Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.” Release your cares to God today, and let His presence calm your fears. God has everything under control, and He will show you the way to go.
