March 1, 2011 - Do Good

By Kristen Feola

“Don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God” (Hebrews 13:16, NLT).

One morning at breakfast, I challenged my daughters to look for an opportunity to be a good friend to someone at school. I prayed the same thing for myself, that God would show me how I could bless another person that day.

At dinner, we took turns telling what happened. Jocelyn, my 5-year-old, went first. She talked about how her friend, Jada, was upset because her missionary grandfather had to return to Papua New Guinea this week. Jocelyn made Jada feel happy instead of sad. Isabelle, my 7-year-old, said she didn’t find anyone to help. Then I shared.

I explained how I had called my dear friend, Judy, to encourage her. However, by the end of the conversation, I was the one who was being built up — big time! She blessed me.

When we open our hearts and our hands to show God’s love to others, we usually end up receiving much more than we gave. Never underestimate the power of one simple act of kindness. It just may change someone’s life. Maybe even yours.
