  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

July 27, 2011 - Honoring God With Our Gifts

By Sylvia Turner

“We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith” (Romans 12:6, NIV).

Recently we saw a gifted singer being interviewed on television. He told of how one of his best-known songs came to him in the middle of the night. He woke up and the whole song was there. He sang it into a recorder beside his bed and then went back to sleep. What a gift! His great musical gift comes from God. Sadly, the man does not use it to bring honor to God.

We’ve met a Christian man who is a billionaire. He has a gift for making and handling money. He has contributed huge amounts of money to the Lord’s work. He honors the Lord with his great gift.

I have basic ability to do bookkeeping. Though it’s not something I enjoy doing, it honors the Lord when I use it in doing the necessary financial reports. I have some good basic musical abilities, and it honors the Lord when I use them. He hasn’t made me a musical genius or a mathematical genius, but He’s honored when I use what He has given me.

My husband Wayne honors the Lord when he uses his gifts of teaching and preaching. He also has abilities in building, though he feels greatly limited. He honors the Lord when he uses them.

Sometimes the use of one gift fades away because of life’s circumstances, but God has given us other gifts to use to bring honor to Him.

The Lord’s question to each of us is, “What have you done with the gift I gave you? I gave it to you, and you honor Me when you use it. It gives Me great pleasure to see you using My gift to bless others.”

Let us all use our gifts to bring pleasure, joy and honor to the Lord!
