January 31, 2012 - It’s All About Team

By Scott McChrystal

“Who will listen to what you say? The share of the man who stayed with the supplies is to be the same as that of him who went down to the battle. All will share alike” (1 Samuel 30:24, NIV).

King David was a great military leader who knew the importance of teamwork in winning battles. He recognized that the elements of combat, combat support, and combat service support must work together if Israel was to be victorious.

When members of his army recommended that rear-echelon soldiers not be given a share of the booty captured as the Israelites defeated the Amalekites, David vetoed the recommendation. He gave a share to every soldier.

In society today, there is a strong tendency to promote self. But promoting self is a bad tactic. Life is about teamwork. There is an old saying that applies here: When you see a frog on the top of a flagpole, rest assured he did not get there by himself!

Lesson learned: Your contribution is important. But so is the contribution of other soldiers with different responsibilities. Give your fellow soldiers the credit and respect they deserve.
