  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

April 23, 2012 - Thankful for Fulfilled Promises

By Greg Ebie

“And so God gave Israel the entire land that he had solemnly vowed to give to their ancestors. They took possession of it and made themselves at home in it. And God gave them rest on all sides, as he had also solemnly vowed to their ancestors. Not a single one of their enemies was able to stand up to them — God handed over all their enemies to them” (Joshua 21:43,44, The Message).

God kept the promises He had made to the nation of Israel. He gave them possession of the land of Canaan and rest from all their enemies; finally the people could settle down and just enjoy life. Wouldn’t it be nice if the next verse simply said, “And they all lived happily ever after?” It doesn’t.

If you know anything about Israel’s history, it isn’t long before they are fighting among themselves, being oppressed by their enemies, and turning their backs on God. Even though the people chose to follow God, they soon were off chasing other gods. Put simply, they weren’t satisfied with what God had given to them; they wanted something more.

We need to be careful whenever we find ourselves complaining. Are we expressing a legitimate concern, or have we wandered away from a place of godly contentment and forgotten our gratitude for God’s provision? We need God’s help to uncover our real motives. Thankfully we have His Word and His Spirit to guide us and uncover the real condition of our hearts.

I don’t want to be like Israel and take for granted all the blessings God has given to me. Lord, help me to always have a grateful heart and to be a good steward of what You have given me.
