  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. May 11, 2012 - No Room for Idols

By Dave Kidd

“Jesus said, ‘The first in importance is, “Listen, Israel: The Lord your God is one; so love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.” And here is the second: “Love others as well as you love yourself.” There is no other commandment that ranks with these’” (Mark 12:29-31, The Message).

Most of us would not even think about worshipping idols. That is something done in other countries far removed from Christianity, right?

While that is largely true in regard to actually praying to an idol, even Christians can fall into hidden forms of idolatry without realizing it. For example, we can become so wrapped up in our spouse, our children and our family that we edge God out of His desired and deserved first place in our lives.

By diligently keeping God first in our lives, we do not do less for our families, but ever so much more. We align ourselves, our marriages and our families with God’s intentions and desires, which form the best possible plan for our lives. Guarding this aspect of our hearts, this primary devotion to God, goes a long way in keeping us from the evils of misplaced priorities.

Let’s seek to please, honor and live for God first, and love our spouses and children as He loves us. Our families, in turn, can love other people together.

Priorities are important. What are yours?
