June 25, 2012 - Paths

By Hilda Schnell

The rain has ceased, at least for now. Today's warmth and breeze invite me to walk and feel more alive. I head down the familiar trail and see the trees swaying in the wind, reaching for the sky. As I look at the ground around me I notice little paths here and there.

I begin to wonder … How does a path get worn in a life?

Then I think about the paths in my own life that I want to be well-worn.

Paths …

to the Word of God, my treasure.

to the secret place of prayer.

to the mercy seat in the Holy of Holies.

to the hearts of cherished family.

to the lives of dear friends.

to the glory of God-given dreams.

Jeremiah 6:16 gives us a glimpse into paths: “This is what the Lord says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls’” (NIV).

I wonder again … How does a path get worn in a life?

By sheer habit. Returning over and over to the same places. Making the same choices.

By God's grace may we choose good ways and walk in them daily.
