  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

August 9, 2012 - Through the Water and Fire

By Ron Johnson

“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you, O Jacob, and He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you” (Isaiah 43:1,2, NKJV).

Please notice that the above quoted passage from Isaiah doesn’t say, “If you pass through the waters … if you pass through the fire ….” It plainly states, “When you pass through the waters … when you pass through the fire ….” Everyone faces the challenges of life. The promise to the believer isn’t a life devoid of testing; rather, we are promised we will be tested. However, we are promised that our Lord is with us in the test and will see us through.

Notice in the first verse of Isaiah 43 that the Lord God, Creator of heaven and earth, is speaking. He is the One who has created us; therefore, we are told not to be afraid. “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you be your name; you are Mine.” Wow! Not only is God our Creator, He is also our personal Redeemer. He has paid the price and redeemed us from the slavery of sin and its curse.

We are told that God knows our name and calls out to us individually. Then the Lord expressly tells us, “You are Mine.” In light of these facts, we are able to lay claim to the promises of God’s intervention and deliverance. “When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.”

Waters … rivers … fire … flame. Many perils are symbolized by these words and will confront us until our final redemption. Despite this fact, the Lord promises us that His presence will be with us and therefore we will ultimately prevail. As His children, we may rest assured our Heavenly Father is aware of our problems and the difficult situations we face. We can count on Him to come to our rescue and deliver us in our time of need.

If you are going through the floodwaters of life, or if the flames threaten to engulf you, hold firm to God’s hand and He will see you through to ultimate victory. Whatever you may be facing, God knows about it and He cares. He loves you and feels your pain. He will lift you up and carry you forward through life’s journey. We are victorious through Christ!
