    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

August 10, 2012 - Flying the Friendly Skies

By Doug Clay

A cover of Reader’s Digest carried a featured article, “50 Secrets Your Pilot Won’t Tell You.”

OK, as a person who flies frequently, that headline caught my attention. As I read it, I chuckled at some of the pilots’ quotes, like … “We miss the peanuts too!”

The US Airways pilot who said, “Some FAA rules just don’t make sense, like the fact when we’re at 39,000 feet going over 400 miles an hour in a plane that could hit turbulence at any moment, flight attendants can walk around and serve hot coffee. But when on the ground on a flat piece of asphalt, going less than 10 miles an hour, they’ve got to be buckled in tighter than a Nascar driver.”

But I also read some quotes that made me go hmm … like the American Airlines pilot who said, “We tell passengers what they need to know. We don’t tell them things that are going to scare them. So you’ll never hear me say, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, we just had engine failure’ even if that’s true.”

Well, one thing is for sure, when you fly, you are putting your trust in the hands of someone you probably don’t know. Thankfully, when it comes to our journey with the Lord, He is always there. In fact, as the pilot of my life, I am confident that He is always watching over me; He is always working for me and He is eagerly waiting for me.

Airline pilots might have secrets they don’t tell passengers, but Jesus was very clear with His followers.

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, and trust also in me. There is more than enough room in my Father’s home. If this were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? When everything is ready, I will come and get you, so that you will always be with me where I am. And you know the way to where I am going” (John 14:1-4, NLT).
