  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. June 18, 2013 - Just One Thing

By Gary Rogers

Moving to a new home is a good way to rediscover what's important in terms of your possessions. When you have to pack it, load it, move it, unload it, and unpack it, you naturally ask, "Do I really need this?"

A few years ago, Paula and I were caught up in a whirlwind of transition as God redirected our lives and ministry. We moved from a city where we had lived for a little over 17 years. During the move, we had plenty of opportunities to say, "We really don't need that anymore."

In Luke 10:41,42, Jesus said to His friend Martha, "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed" (NIV). I love how the Lord narrowed it down to "one thing." That one priority was a deep relationship with Him.

Like Martha, we can easily get stressed and worried and focused on stuff that is not that important. The "one thing" needed is to worship Jesus as Lord and keep Him in that position. Things, people, places and circumstances will try to dethrone Jesus as Lord. Like Martha, daily worries can replace Jesus as the primary focus of our thoughts and meditation.

During that move, it was like the Lord was saying to me, "Gary, Gary, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed." Maybe the Lord is saying the same thing to you. It might be time to reevaluate and possibly get rid of some "stuff."
