July 9, 2013 - Love Produces Encouragement

By Scott McChrystal

"Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints" (Philemon 7, NIV).

Military life can be tough. But everyone, even the most hardened warrior, is encouraged by acts of love.

A hardened veteran of missionary ministry himself, Paul expressed this fact in a letter. Philemon's love shown toward fellow believers brought joy and encouragement to Paul's heart.

Despite wartime conditions, U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have demonstrated love to children in both countries. Their actions have brought joy and encouragement not only to the kids, but also to millions of Americans back home.

Showing love doesn't require some special ability or high level of training. It boils down to a decision. You decide you want to demonstrate love to another person by words you speak or actions you take. It can be as simple as holding a door for someone or mowing the grass for a senior citizen. Or perhaps, you show God's love simply by listening patiently to another's person's problems.

Love never fails. Don't underestimate your ability to encourage many through your love shown to others.

Try it!
