  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

July 11, 2013 - God Is Our Helper

By Kristen Feola

"The Lord is with me; he is my helper" (Psalm 118:7, NIV).

On a blazing summer day, the memory is a little remote. But during a winter drive, the intersection was dangerous. Located at the bottom of a very steep hill, it was especially treacherous when the roads were icy. That particular day, I was extra careful because I had an accident in the same spot a year earlier.

As I drove the snow-covered road and approached the stoplight, I lightly pumped the brakes to slow down. However, my wheels hit a patch of black ice, and I lost control of the car. We started sliding toward the vehicle in front of us, which was waiting at the red light.

There was nothing I could do to stop our momentum. When I saw that a collision was inevitable, I thought, "Oh, no. Not again!" Then, I cried out, "Jesus, help me!" As soon as the words left my lips, our car hit a patch of dry ground and came to a sudden halt. Had I not prayed in that moment of desperation, I'm sure my daughters and I would have crashed.

Psalm 118:7 says God is always with us. Deuteronomy 31:6 makes it clear He will never leave us nor forsake us. We can be assured that during times of trouble, God our Helper stands ready to act on our behalf. We can be confident of His divine deliverance when we call upon His name.

Have you ever had an experience in which you knew the Lord intervened in a supernatural way? If so, go back to that place in your mind and remember it. Relive the awe and wonder you felt at God's provision. Thank the Lord again for helping you and for the countless other times for which you aren't even aware.

Our God is indeed mighty to save. Take a few moments right now to praise Him for the help He gives you every day. He is worthy!
