July 24, 2013 - Light and Life

By Alice E. Luce

On the old Eddystone Lighthouse off the coast of England is engraved the motto: "To give light and to save life."

That is a fine summing-up of the work of a Christian. There is an intimate connection between light and life. Study the First Epistle of John in this connection, where Christ is revealed as (a) Light, (b) Love, and (c) Life.

The three activities of the mind are (a) knowing, (b) feeling, and (c) willing; and the three revelations of Christ listed above correspond to these.

This should be the result of all our reading of the Bible: First, we receive Christ as our Light, that we may know the things that are freely given to us of God.

Secondly, we take Christ as Love, indwelling and controlling us, casting out all fear, taking full possession of our emotions.

Thirdly, we appropriate Him as our Life, giving Him our will, which is the citadel of our being, that we may carry out His will.

As He thus controls our intellect, emotions and will, His Spirit will use us as lighthouses to shine forth with His glorious gospel that others may receive the Light and the Life.
