August 16, 2013 - Do You Get To?

By Doug Clay

"Whatever you do or say, do it as a representative of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through him to God the Father" (Colossians 3:17, NLT).

Sometimes, the slightest adjustment can radically change your perspective. Simply changing one vowel in a three-letter word works. Can you guess the word? It's moving from "GOT" to "GET."

Every now and then I meet people who view their life tasks as "GOT to" obligations. They feel like those responsibilities are things God sentenced them to endure.

I want to encourage you to think about your role in life as a "GET to," not a "GOT to."

As followers of Christ ...

We "GET to" share God's Word with others.

We "GET to" contribute to the spiritual formation of people around us.

We "GET to" pray for the needs of others.

We "GET to" inject Christ's joy in family events and other special moments.

We "GET to" walk with people through some of the most painful times of their lives, supporting them with God's comfort.

Are you GETTING the point?

I am well aware that, at times, our service within the church or on the job can be taxing and energy-draining, but it is God who has called you! Your life is a "GET to" privilege, not a "GOT to" drudgery.

— Doug Clay is general treasurer of the Assemblies of God.
