  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

August 28, 2013 - What's Croaking?

By Doug Clay

The story is told of a farmer who came into town and asked the owner of a restaurant if he could use a million frog legs. The restaurant owner was shocked and asked the man where he could get so many frog legs!

The farmer replied, "There's a pond near my house that is full of frogs -- millions of them. They croak all night long, and they're about to make me crazy!"

The restaurant owner and the farmer agreed the farmer would deliver frogs to the restaurant, 500 at a time every week. The first week, the farmer returned to the restaurant looking rather sheepish with two scrawny little frogs.

"Where are all the frogs?" the restaurant owner asked.

"I was mistaken," the farmer admitted. "There were only these two frogs in the pond. But they sure were making a lot of noise!"

Do you lie awake at night worrying about things that seem almost as overwhelming as a million croaking frogs? Worrying can become a plague, even for the person committed to the life of faith. If a couple of croaking frogs have you all tied up in knots ... remember:

1. God delights in carrying you close to His heart. "He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young" (Isaiah 40:11, NIV).

2. God wants you to give Him your worries. "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).

3. God will give you relief on a daily basis. "Give us today our daily bread" (Matthew 6:11). "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own" (Matthew 6:34).

Don't let life's croaking frogs keep you from letting God's peace guard your heart and mind.
