  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

September 13, 2013 - Jesus Has no Peers

By Hal Donaldson

"Time" magazine published an interview with author and guru Deepak Chopra, whose self-help books have sold millions of copies. Some have called Chopra "the swami of the rich, hip and famous." One of his followers said, "He's right up there with the Dalai Lama, Buddha, and Jesus."

These kinds of erroneous comparisons are nothing new — especially among cultic leaders, mystic philosophers, and world dictators who demand the adulation of their followers.

Jesus has no peers. Only He died for the sins of the world, arose from the grave, and sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven. No other historical figure, regardless of his or her human wisdom or apparent achievement, can make that claim. Jesus is the Son of the living God.

Some years ago I visited the home of a college friend. There were no crosses, Scripture verses, or biblical influences to be found. Instead, he had a shrine to a mythical goddess above his fireplace. He described himself as a "seeker of truth" and compared Jesus to Confucius and other philosophers.

"Can you prove to me that Jesus is more than a philosopher?" he asked.

I responded respectfully and honestly: "If you're looking for historical facts other than those found in the Bible, then I really can't. I know how Jesus made himself real to me … and I know all He's done for my life. But if you're truly a 'seeker of truth,' then I'd say it's your responsibility to seek Him and discover for yourself that He is the Son of the living God, the One who died for your sins and arose from the grave."

I corresponded with my friend for several months after that, but I never heard if he ultimately discovered the Truth — that Jesus has no peers. He alone is the Savior of the world, the only way to eternal life.

Jesus said in John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (NIV).
