November 28, 2013 - Every Step of the Way

By Scott Harrup

I'm usually an NIV reader, but sometimes The Message really captures a great thought. This one's appropriate on Thanksgiving Day, and year-round:

"Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ — the Message — have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives — words, actions, whatever — be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way" (Colossians 3:15-17).

That final phrase captures the real message of Thanksgiving. God should be the focus of our gratitude, and our thanksgiving should drive everything we do. When our hearts daily overflow with thanks, the most demanding or mundane or even painful tasks and circumstances are regenerated into opportunities for personal growth and the pursuit of joy.

As for the good things in life, the things for which we might offer casual thanks in our rush to enjoy them? We begin to sense their true value, and our gratitude becomes deeper and more worshipful.

May this Thanksgiving Day remind you of God's abundant love and blessing at every turn. And may tomorrow dawn with the realization that His love and blessing never fail.
