  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

January 23, 2014 - Lighten Your Burden

By Dorothy Rugg

"Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest, [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest (relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good — not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne" (Matthew 11:28-30, Amplified).

Many things can burden us and weigh us down. Sometimes we labor for the wrong things and lose our joy. But we can become discouraged even when we work for the right things. We may feel overloaded by life's responsibilities. Jesus invites us to come to Him.

A yoke was a double harness. Often, one harness was larger and meant for the stronger, more experienced animal, while the smaller harness was used for the animal being trained.

We are to be "harnessed" to Jesus — learning from Him, living for Him, doing things His way. As we are obediently serving Him, He bids us to give our burdens to Him. Through Jesus we can become truly free.

The enemy of our soul wants to throw doubts and fears into our lives. Satan wants to make God look like He doesn't care for us.

"If God is so big and so good, how come this or that situation is happening in your life?" the tempter will whisper in one's mind.

If we become discouraged we can become careless in our walk with the Lord and follow after our own desires. Remember, the enemy of your soul wants only to kill, steal and destroy. Satan wants you to fail; he wants you to reject the Lord.

God sent His Son Jesus that we might have life and life to the full. The Word tells us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us. The Word tells us to seek first the kingdom of God then all the things that we need will be added unto us.

The most important thing we can do for our lives is to be "yoked" with Jesus — to allow Him to be Lord of our lives. Let's learn from Jesus. Let's seek His ways. Let's live for Him.
