  • July 11, 2014 - Reflections

    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

April 17, 2014 - Pressing Toward the Goal

By Jessie Pen-Lewis

Paul tells us, "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after" (Philippians 3:12, KJV). It is as much as to say, "I have not yet gained all there is to gain, but my soul follows hard after Christ for all that He has for me."

Let us gather up [Paul's] expressions in this third chapter of Philippians: "I follow after" (v. 12), "This one thing I do" (v. 13), "Forgetting those things which are behind" (v. 13), "Reaching forth [or stretching forth] unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus" (vv. 13,14). It is as much as if [Paul] would say, "I cannot take a glance behind. I stretch forth eagerly, and lay hold of all for which Christ has laid hold of me."

It is never safe for us to slacken this eager stretching forth, never safe to rest on past blessings, never safe to sit down and count up our spiritual riches. After all the revelations of the Lord that Paul had, he says, "I count not myself to have apprehended."

That vision of Christ on the way to Damascus, that death with Christ which ended Saul the Pharisee, that day when he was filled with the Holy Ghost, was only the beginning of the real life in God. On the resurrection side of the cross, the pathway an ever-widening vista, [Paul] cried: "That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection."

"Let us therefore … be thus minded" (verse 15). Whatever point we may be at in the spiritual life, let us mind this same thing, let us press on to deeper and deeper depths in the knowledge of Him and the power of His resurrection.

— "Pressing Toward the Goal" originally appeared in the January 1, 1949, Pentecostal Evangel.
