Senior Adults

A place of love and fellowship

By Maurice Shelton,
First Assembly of God,
Conway, Arkansas

My wife, Maureen, and I love the people in our senior adult Sunday school class. Every Sunday morning we greet each other, shake hands and hug necks, just like family. We enjoy the fellowship, the camaraderie and the like-mindedness we share as we study the Word of God together. Every month we all go to a restaurant for lunch after church, and we also get together with other families for a midweek dinner.

People are drawn to our senior adult class by the love and friendship they experience. And every Sunday we get a good lesson as well. Our senior adult class is hosting computer classes for people 50 and older. I've been wanting to get a computer, so now is my chance to dive in. I look forward to learning opportunities.

I love our church. I am an usher and greeter, and what I really enjoy is the opportunity to minister to other people. For two years, I have gone to the nursing home every Sunday morning to teach the residents there.

Through my senior adult class, I found this area of ministry. Three other people go with me to play the piano and sing. There are about 20 residents who come to the service. We hug them and let them know we care. My brother and sister spent their last years in nursing homes, so I know how hungry the residents are for a personal touch. After we sing, I teach for a few minutes, and we talk about topics from the Bible that help them from day to day.

Senior adult ministries plays a big part in my life, and I'm thankful for it.

To give senior adults opportunities to minister, and be ministered to, in the local church, fulfilling the church's mission to the Lord, His church and the world.
