The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

Vantage Point: The World at Your Door

By Ken Horn
June 27, 2010

A few years ago I was privileged to travel on two extended assignments to an area of the world we call Central Eurasia. These were two life-changing trips to exotic countries. Some of their names are familiar: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey. Others are unfamiliar to many: Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan.

These trips became several stories in our World Missions Edition of the Pentecostal Evangel. I traveled with Dr. Mark Hausfeld, who was the AG World Missions area director for that part of the world at the time. I came away from those trips with two major impressions: (1) the immensity of the need and (2) the dedication of those called to minister in those nations.

The nations on our itinerary shared one predominant trait: Their populations are mostly Muslim.

Last year, Dr. Hausfeld was called upon to head a new ministry thrust. He became director of Global Initiative: Reaching Muslim Peoples, formerly known as the Center for Ministry to Muslims, an effective ministry since 1984. Like CMM before it, Global Initiative will continue to equip churches for ministry to this people group. But it will add a major new emphasis — to mobilize church planting teams among Muslim peoples.

It is a myth that Muslims will not turn to Christ. Though the challenge is great, it has been reported that more Muslims are currently coming to faith in Christ than at any other time in history. Hausfeld has the experience and heart needed for this task. And it is not just an international task.

The world is at our door. That means there are opportunities to reach Muslims for Christ right here in the United States. That’s why we have asked Dr. Hausfeld to write about Islam in America. Christians must look at Muslims the way Jesus does — as souls in need of salvation.
