    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

David Akers: Power Source

Excerpted from David Akers’ June 19, 2011, Father’s Day sermon at Marlton (N.J.) Assembly of God, where Jonathan T. Wegner is pastor. The full sermon is available on the church website, www.marltonag.org.

The evangelist was speaking on the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Gifts our Father gives us. Acts 1:4,5 says, “On one occasion, while [Jesus] was eating with them, he gave them this command: ‘Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit’” (NIV).

I was thinking, That’s pretty cool; I’ve been baptized by water. But I really wasn’t thinking anything special was going to happen that day. I just was there because I still needed God to reveal himself.

I just went up to the stage. I raised my hands up and I said, “God, You know what I need.” I started just worshipping out loud, speaking it out as it came. All of a sudden, English changed and I started speaking in a language that I’ve never heard before. It came out loud and it came out long.

I’m thinking, That just happened! It was a revelation that day that I had never seen. It was like Thomas seeing the nail prints of Christ. It was the biggest revelation of my life.

The next day I was asked to pray over a child at a children’s hospital. It was so very important that I went there, apparently. So I went in there and this little baby had so many issues. She didn’t have enough circulation in her body. She had a big swelling of edema; her head was swollen so large.

The doctor said that they needed to take her off the ventilation system because what would end up happening is that she would suffocate and die; she was never going to lose this edema. Never.

Well, God gives us gifts, right? He’s a healer. If you call on His name, He heals. I went in there. Her father was standing on one side, and I don’t believe the father and the mother were Christians. I put my hand on the baby, and I started praying.

And then, all of a sudden, I start speaking in a language I’d never heard before. And I’m thinking, Does this guy hear me? Is he going to ask me to leave? But truly, I believe God. I believe in His Spirit. I believe in His power. I believe in His promises, and I believe in the gift of healing, which He used with me that day.

Doctors can’t explain it. I have a picture of her. This was about a month ago, and now she looks far better.

The next day, they couldn’t keep the oxygen tubes in her nose, because there was so much fluid coming out. All that fluid that was in her body was escaping.

The parents were here at the 9 a.m. service. She’s now getting out of the children’s hospital. She was supposed to be getting out last week, but there were some insurance complications. And this little girl is going to be fine. The number one thing is this: The doctors can’t explain it, but we can.

We know where the power came from. We know if you call on the power of Jesus, He can heal. He can do all kinds of miracles. He can do all kinds of wonders. If you allow Jesus into your life, if you believe that He is the Son of God, if you believe that He died for your sins, if you repent of your sins and you go towards Jesus, the Holy Spirit will be in you. He is dwelling with you and in you.

That Spirit turns into your “GPS system.” Your GPS system will align your spirit with God’s will so you know the direction He wants you to go.

How do you get there? You do it by reading the Bible, by praying, by fasting and asking your flesh to be weakened so your spirit can be uplifted. You come to worship Him, you come to do it in a mighty way, and you submit totally to His will.

Let me ask you this: Do you want God to reveal himself to you? Do you want what God has in store for you? If you do, be real with yourself. Quit holding on to the strongholds, quit holding on to all the weight on your back, lift it off and come to Him. The weight is a lot lighter on your knees, I promise you that.

Submit yourself to Him. Obey. See how the Holy Spirit will guide you. See what wonderful things He will do in your life.

But you need to be hungry. You need to be hungry for God’s gift; be hungry for what He has for you. He did it to me, and He showed me wonders and miracles.

It’s happening all around the world, and it can happen to each one of you. What you have to do is the same as where it started with me: come up to this altar. It starts by coming up here, accepting everything that God has in store for you, and making sure the things you want match up with the things that you really do need.

Ask Him for your needs to bet met — your needs, not your wants. Store up those treasures in heaven, not the things that are going to rust and go away. And I ask you, if you needed that in your life, the altar is going to be open. If you want these gifts in your life, come on up. Share yourself with God.
