    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

The Holy Spirit

May 18, 2014

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is a member of the Trinity. He is God. Like God the Father and Jesus, the Holy Spirit was present at the beginning of the world. Genesis 1:2 says, “The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” From the very beginning of the earth, the Holy Spirit was active.

What does the Holy Spirit do?

The Holy Spirit is a gift for every believer. He does many wonderful things:

• Guides us in truth (John 16:13)

• Helps us pray (Romans 8:26)

• Gives us power to share our faith (Acts 1:8)

• Shows us our sin when we are not living as God wants us to (John 16:8)

• Helps us live for God and show others the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22,23)

• Gives us special gifts (1 Corinthians 12:4-11)

Where is the Holy Spirit?

Because He is God, the Holy Spirit is everywhere. Jesus promised His disciples that God the Father would send a helper, the Holy Spirit, to stay with us forever. This promise is still true for believers today. The gift of the baptism in the Holy Spirit is for us just as much as it was for Jesus’ disciples.
