    By Jean S. Horner
The other day while walking down a corridor in a public building, I saw what appeared to be someone walking toward me. On coming closer, I found it was my own reflection in a huge mirror. For a moment it frightened me. Somehow a full-length reflection of one’s self is a startling thing. ...

Readers, ministers and friends,

In 1913, the publication we now know as the Pentecostal Evangel (PE) was launched. Though its name, leadership and design have changed throughout the century that followed, it has remained a staple of the Assemblies of God (AG) community and a trailblazer of Christian communication, carrying news of the work of the Holy Spirit around the world. The AG has shared PE with as many as possible, and its stories have introduced readers to Jesus, changed lives, and connected our ever-expanding fellowship for more than 101 years.

In recent decades, however, demand for PE has seen a significant decline. While AG adherents have multiplied, readership of the PE print magazine has fallen to an unsustainable level. This in no way reflects on the outstanding work of the PE staff. The reality is that, in this rapidly changing media climate, we needed to rethink the format of PE. Its purpose — to communicate Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit — transcends medium or method. So in order to continue the legacy of PE and stay true to the goal of being a part of “the greatest evangelism the world has ever seen,” we knew we had to make some changes.

After much prayer and analysis, we’ve decided to move PE to an online news platform, called PE News, to more efficiently service the fellowship. Through multiple daily stories accessible on both online and mobile platforms, PE News will offer a clear and timely understanding of what God is doing through the AG. Whenever and wherever, you’ll be able to connect with PE News for free. Had this opportunity been available when the AG was founded, I believe we would have seized it even sooner.

This means we will transition from production of PE as a weekly print publication to an online news presence at the end of 2014. We feel this website will carry on the heritage of PE in a fresh way. For churches who still wish to have a printed piece to distribute, PE News editors will produce a free weekly summary to download, print and share.

Meanwhile, we’ve also recognized a space for an entirely different kind of Spirit-empowered ministry voice. We’re excited to announce the launch of Vital, a creative discipleship tool we believe will pave new ground in our fellowship and reach into the daily lives of its readers. The first issue of Vital magazine will be delivered in January 2015. However, you can experience Vital’s daily content now at and flip through a digital version of Vital magazine at

When the print version of PE transitions in the final week of December, we want to include you in the new era of ministry that follows. Currently, if you or your church has a PE subscription, it will roll into an annual subscription for Vital at that time. We believe it will enrich your life and help put your world in context.

We appreciate your support of AG publications as we give voice to a global movement of the Spirit.
