July 30, 2012 - Unforgettable
By Lydia Pate
“Many are the plans in a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21, NIV).
I looked at the clock on the wall. The evening shift was almost over in the critical care unit where I was doing a clinical rotation as a nursing student. I was determined to leave on time, but God had other plans.
A call light beeped outside of one of my patients’ rooms. I took a deep breath. I had been on my feet for most of the night, and had just sat down to complete my nursing documentation.
“What can I do for you?” I said.
“I just wanted to give you this before you leave.” Jane handed me a small card.
As I read the text, tears stung my eyes. The enormity of the words humbled me: “If you meet me and forget me, you have lost nothing. But if you meet Jesus Christ and forget Him, you have lost everything.”
I smiled. “I’m a Christian.”
Jane beamed. Suddenly, my desire to get out by midnight didn’t seem so pressing.
We chatted about the Lord, and when I finally left, I assured Jane of my prayers for her complete recovery.
One woman’s gesture, years ago during my nursing school days, stirred my passion. Her illness and weakened state didn’t hinder her from sharing the love of God. I never saw Jane again.
But during our conversation, I promised Jane I would pass on the card she gave me, and over the years, I’ve given out many similar tracts. Ultimately, the transformative power is in the message. Only Jesus has the power to save people’s lives.
And only God knows the odyssey of the card I received and passed on. It’s still a daily reminder that I am Christ’s ambassador. How forgettable am I? When people meet me, what do they remember? Do they recall a strong flavor of Lydia, or a sweet aroma of Jesus?
Prayer: Open our eyes, Lord, to the needs around us. Intrude upon our tidy plans; show us Your divine ways. Turn our focus from earthly agendas to heavenly priorities. Help us to seize those God-filled moments and share Your love with everyone we meet!
